GRIPS Cinema: Laskar Pelangi (The Rainbow Troops)

Cheers to another successful ISC event!

Clad in red and white for the Indonesian movie :)

Sweet Aisyah & me:)

My talented friend, Taufik gave a wonderful rendition of "Somewhere over the Rainbow" just before the screening.

Yesterday, the GRIPS Cinema screened an Indonesian movie named "Laskar Pelangi" (The Rainbow Troops). Laskar Pelangi has been awarded the Best Asian Film award at the Berlin Film Festival and was also screened at many other film festivals. Yet, accolades and recognition aside, this movie was a simple yet meaningful one that touched many of our hearts last night.

Set in the rural areas of Belitong, a teacher changes the lives of 10 students in a small school named Muhammadiyah. The carefree days of learning, loving and dealing with the harsh realities of life in the rural areas of Indonesia whereby most children are forced to become coolies at a young age clearly illustrate the value of education. Indeed, while most of us may whine about the endless homework or tests we are given, it is important to remind ourselves that somewhere out there, somebody is fighting for his/her right to education.

As such, there is no reason why we shouldn't cherish this opportunity of education and truly learn to appreciate the value of knowledge.

My favorite quotation from the movie:
"To live and give as much as you can, not to take as much as you can".

The carefree days of Tokyo life ....
